Other Church Claims

In addition to the Catholic and Anglican churches, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse looked at other religious institutions who have received claims involving child sexual abuse. The Royal Commission in particular looked at (amongst others) the following institutions:

• The Salvation Army;

• Jehovah’s Witnesses;

• Australian Christian Churches and affiliated Pentecostal Churches such as Salesians of Don Bosco; St John of God Brothers (The Hospitaller Order of St John of God); Missionaries of the Sacred Heart; Dominican Friars; Marist Fathers (Society of Mary); Sisters of Mercy Australia; Society of Jesus – Jesuits; De La Salle Brothers; Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (Passionist Order); and Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Fathers); Pallottines (Society of the Catholic Apostolate); and

• Jewish institutions such as the Yeshiva Bondi and Yeshiva Melbourne.

The Royal Commission found that like the Catholic and Anglican Churches, child sexual abuse was highly prevalent throughout these varied institutions. Some of the perpetrators (amongst others) mentioned in the Royal Commission include the following:

• Mr Bill Neill – Jehovah’s Witnesses

• Daniel Hayman – Yeshiva Bondi

• Rabbi David Kramer – Yeshiva Melbourne

• Father Francis Klep – Salesians of Don Bosco

• Father Julian Fox - Salesians of Don Bosco

• Father David Rapson - Salesians of Don Bosco

• Brother John Joseph Donnellan – St John of God Brothers

• Brother Edward Mamo – Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

• Father Anthony (“Tony”) Caruana - Missionaries of the Sacred Heart

• Father Brian Davis – Dominican Friars

• Father Charles Barnett – Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Fathers)

• Father Brian Spillane - Congregation of the Mission (Vincentian Fathers)

• Father Kevin O’Donnell

• Father John Denham

• Father Paul Raymond Evans - Salesians of Don Bosco

• Father Michael McArdle

• Brother Bernard McGrath - St John of God Brothers

• Father Robert Claffey

• Father Daniel Lyne - Passionist Order

• Brother Vincent Crawford - Passionist Order

• Brother Paschal Bartlett - Franciscan Friars (Order of the Friars Minor)
