Brother Fintan Dwyer
Brother Fintan Dwyer's was a former member of the De La Salle Brothers in Australia. He was born in 1905 in Sydney, NSW as Louis Victor Dwyer and died in 1990. Brother Dwyer attended at St Peter’s Primary School in Surry Hills, NSW and afterwards joined the Order as a trainee brother at the age of 15. Brother Dwyer completed his religious training at the Cootamundra novitiate in 1922 at the age of 17, plus completed work experience as a trainee teacher at the primary school in Cootamundra now known as Sacred Heart Central School.
Between 1923 to 1944, Brother Fintan went on to teach/serve at the following schools:
De La Salle Primary School - Cootamundra, NSW (now known as Sacred Heart Central School);
De La Salle College - Armidale, NSW (now known as O’Connor College);
De La Salle College - Ashfield, NSW;
De La Salle College - Malvern, Vic; and
St Bede’s College - Mentone, Vic.
In 1945, Brother Fintan was excluded from teaching with the Order and was given the role of recruiting office, touring around Australia recruiting new members to the Order.
It is reported that allegations of sexual and physical abuse have been made against Brother Dwyer when he served/taught at various schools, especially at St Bede’s College. Brother Fintan was in charge at boarders at St Bede’s College where one former boarder made allegations against Brother Fintan in regards to be have been sexually abused by him one particular night when he was seven years old (Grade 3), taking advantage of his vulnerability after the death of the student’s father.
