Marist Brothers High School Hamilton

The Hamilton school site has been led by Marist Brothers principals since the 1930s when it was known as Marist Brothers High School, Hamilton. The school changed its name  in 1986 when it became the co-educational senior St Francis Xavier’s College.

The decision to change its name was also due to the devastating evidence that was disclosed at a Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse public hearing in Newcastle in 2016. This was in relation to child sex crimes occurring at Marist Brothers Hamilton and a series of high-profile convictions of former Marist Brothers teachers.

At least eight Brothers who worked at the school before 1986 have been convicted of child sex offences and the order has accepted at least another four sexually abused students. Two of the worst offenders was Darcy John O’Sullivan – known as Brother Dominic – and Brother Romauld who was sentenced in 2015 to 16 years jail after being convicted on dozens of child abuse charges.
