Brother Geoffrey Veness

Brother Geoffrey Sydney Veness (born 30 September 1953) was a former member of the Marist Brothers who was also principal at St Augustine’s College in Cairns, Queensland. In 2001, Brother Veness pleaded guilty in the Cairns District Court to three counts of indecent treatment of a minor aged 15 under s 210 of the Criminal Code Act 1899 (Qld). The abuse had occurred at a school camp in 1994 when the student was in Year 10. He was sentenced to 12 months jail (suspended). Brother Veness had been principal of St Augustine’s College for six years and it is reported that he left the School shortly afterwards. It is also reported that other known offenders have taught at the school over the years, this includes Brother Gregory Carter; Brother Ross Murrin; and Brother Raymond Foster.
