Brother John Vincent Roberts

Brother John Roberts (who was known by the religious name of Brother Christopher John Roberts) was born on 4 April 1942. He professed his initial vows to the Christian Brothers in 1962 and did his final vows in 1967. As a member of the Christian Brothers, he taught at various schools in Australia and Papua New Guinea between 1964 to 1991. He obtained his teacher’s certificate in 1963 from the Australian Catholic University in 1963. He taught at the following schools in NSW and ACT:

  • St Patrick's College Sutherland - Sydney, NSW (from 1975 to 1977);

  • St Edmund’s College - Canberra, ACT;

  • Edmund Rice College - Wollongong, NSW; and

  • St Dominic’s College - Penrith, NSW (approximately 1990/1991).

Brother Roberts retired from teaching in 1991 but remained with the Order, working at the Christian Brothers head office in Balmain, Sydney.

Royal Commission records dating from 2017 show that the Christian Brothers received five separate complaints between 1975 to 2014 dealing with allegations of sexual abuse by Brother Roberts committed during 1973 to 1990. All these allegations were settled by the Christian Brothers in out of court settlements. However, in 2015, NSW Police received a new allegation in relation to a 13-year-old student from Edmund Rice College being sexually abused by Brother Roberts in the 1980s. Consequently, Brother Roberts was charged by NSW Police with 21 counts dealing with sexual abuse of a minor. In 2016, Brother Roberts pleaded guilty to 11 of those charges leading him to be sentenced to ten years in prison, with a parole period of six years.

Moody Law has in the past represented and is still representing clients who were sexually abused by members of the Christian Brothers at various schools and institutions.
