Brother Keith William Weston

Brother Keith Weston, also known as Brother Keith “Gonzales” Weston, was a former member of the Christian Brothers. Records show that Brother Weston worked at the following schools in Victoria and South Australia:

  • Parade Preparatory College - Alphington, Melbourne;

  • St Joseph's College - Pascoe Vale, Melbourne; and

  • Christian Brothers College - Wakefield Street, Adelaide.

Brother Weston in a submission to the Parliament of Victoria inquiry into the processes by which religious and other non-government organisations respond to the criminal abuse of children by personnel within their organisations was described by a former student as an evil man who was very authoritarian, conservative (socially and morally) and a stickler for conformity . He was fond of brutally punishing students around the schoolyard with a strap carried up his sleeve over misdemeanours such as having unpolished or scuffed shoes. Apart from punishing many students, he would also sexually abuse them. His mode of operation was described as follows:

“He targeted young boys in early pubescence, at a time of maximum personal and sexual vulnerability. He would approach them in the schoolyard or corner them in hallways after school. On occasions he would summon them from class. Under the guise of counselling them about puberty, he would sexually assault them.”

In 2004, Brother Weston pleaded guilty in the Melbourne County Court to indecently assaulting male pupils, aged 11 to 14 at Parade Preparatory College in Alphington, Melbourne. The incidents occurred in 1964 and 1966 to 1968. He was sentenced to 30 months jail, wholly suspended. In 2014, Victoria Police were about to charge Brother Weston with new offences and to have him extradited from Queensland in relation to six more of Brother Weston’s earlier victims making new allegations against him. Before Brother Weston could be extradited back to Victoria, he died on 26 April 2014 at the age of 91.

Royal Commission records indicate also that allegations against Brother Weston were made in 2005 in relation to incidents that occurred between 1965 to 1966 when Brother Weston was at Christian Brothers College in Wakefield Street, Adelaide.

Moody Law has in the past represented and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against various members of the Christian Brothers.
