Marist Brothers Abuse Claims

The Institute of the Marist Brothers is a Catholic religious congregation that has had a presence in Australia for nearly 150 years. In 1872 they opened their first school in New South Wales. Since then, the Marist Brothers have principally been involved in the establishment and operation of numerous primary and secondary schools around Australia. They have taught over 200,000 students since 1984.

In 2014, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse found that many of the Marist Brothers schools employed and, in some cases, protected brothers and other staff who sexually and physically abused children in their care.
